Understanding Qi (pronounced ‘CHEE’)
When your life force energy circulates freely, it heals, strengthens, and nourishes your cells. Your immune system becomes strong. When energy flow is blocked, invading germs have opportunity to fester and germinate, causing illness. Unblocking one’s life force energy can take well-being and happiness to the next level
To experience your energy try the basic exercise described below. It takes less than five minutes.
What is Qi Gong
Qi Gong is the art and science of using breathing techniques, gentle movement, and meditation to cleanse, strengthen, and circulate the life energy (Qi). Qi Gong practice leads to better health and vitality and a tranquil state of mind.
Feeling Qi
When your life force energy circulates freely, it heals, strengthens, and nourishes your cells. Your immune system becomes strong. When energy flow is blocked, invading germs have opportunity to fester and germinate, causing illness. Unblocking one’s life force energy can take well-being and happiness to the next level
To experience your energy try the basic exercise described below. It takes less than five minutes.
- Sit comfortably. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to relax your mind and body.
- Hold the palms of your hands facing each other about 2 inches apart.
- Perform short and slow movements of the palms around their position, keeping them facing each other. For example, make small circles (1 inch) with your right palm. Or move both palms in small circles. When you do this you may start to feel some sensation in the palms. This can be a tingling in the palm or fingertips, warmth, slight pressure or a kind of a magnetic repulsion. I usually feel as if my palms are two magnets pushing away from each other. As I bring them closer I feel repulsion force. You may also try moving the palms farther and closer to each other in slow movements, like playing an accordion.
- Focus and concentrate on the feeling between your palms. This is energy.
Qi Gong as an Exercise
alternative medicine. Other forms of mind-body therapy include yoga, tai chi acupuncture, massage and traditional Chinese medicine.
Qi Gong involves performing gentle movements that are synchronized with the inhalations and exhalations of the breath, making it similar to yoga in that it’s a powerful holistic practice for both the “mind and body.”
Qi Gong is considered to be a mind-body form of exercise.
Qi Gong requires no equipment, can be performed just about anywhere, and can be tailored to an individual’s needs depending on their goals and physical abilities. This makes Qi Gong a good exercise choice for just about anyone who’s looking to improve range of motion, relaxation, and well-being.
According to the National Qi Gong Association, Qi Gong practices can be classified as “martial, medical, and/or spiritual.”
Qi Gong is medical because it involves the body and can promote better cardiovascular health, joint flexibility, while building immunity by lowering chronic stress.
Qi Gong is martial because it’s a learned skill that’s based on centuries’ worth of teachings. It can be spiritual because it involves a mindful concentration of the breath and a focus on improving the flow of Qi.
The sole purpose of all the ancient practices is to circulate your Qi flow so your body can heal naturally. When you relax into Qi Gong movements, your body enters into a state of flow. Your mind returns to the present moment. Your body releases tension. Your mind transforms stress into power. Both body and mind harmonize, awaken your dormant energy and activate your body’s inner healing power.
Many Eastern medicinal practices continue to gain popularity in the West - including Acupuncture, Meditation, Ayurveda. and Yoga — Qi Gong and Tai Chi are also going mainstream.
Eastern practitioners have known about the benefits of Qi Gong for centuries, and today Western scientific research is confirming that Qi Gong can help prevent and manage many health issues. The ancient practice is beneficial for all ages, including older adults and people who are chronically stressed.
Many practitioners agree that healing is heavily influenced by one’s state of mind. It is thought that if a person is more positive and at ease, they will contribute to their own healing. Qi Gong has the potential of being a simple technique that is easy to learn and provides health benefits that improve the quality of life and longevity.
